It is a return to the elemental — smoke, char, and intention, across the world’s culinary traditions.

Global by Taste Network is a celebration of culture across world cuisine. Every chef, every dish, every pour — shaped by coals and embers. Not a festival trick. Not a theme. The oldest cooking method on earth, given the reverence it has always deserved.

In 2026, that premise comes to Breckenridge — where we’re building a community around one of the most ancient cooking formats, in a town that knows what it means to gather at altitude.

Join Breckenridge History for a special activation for Global Breckenridge weekend!

History is truly all around you at Iowa Hill. From the exposed mountainsides to the sluice boxes and giant nozzles dotting the trail, this 1.5-mile guided hike goes through what used to be an active hydraulic mine site. As you wind your way along the trail and past our interpretive signs, you make the journey to a restored boardinghouse (c. 1868) where miners lived.

After exploring the boardinghouse, you’ll have earned your authentic miner’s lunch on top of the hill provided by Hotel Alpenrock before taking the burro trail back down. The Mining History Association named Iowa Hill the best hydraulic mining exhibit in the world.

This is an outdoor hike offered in sun, wind, and rain. It is not intended to be strenuous and there are a lot of stops throughout the hike, but please be aware guests from lower elevations may experience the effects of altitude. Hiking boots or sneakers recommended.

Location:  Iowa Hill Trailhead
Time: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Cost: $35 (includes lunch)

Parking & Transportation

Where can I park?

The most convenient (and FREE though mid-Nov.) parking will be in the South Gondola Parking Structure at 150 Watson Avenue. The rest of Breckenridge’s downtown lots are paid and traditionally fill up fast. Guests should plan to arrive early and park in the same spot for the day or bike, bus or shuttle in from their lodging properties. Ridge Street will be closed Saturday, October 10th, so please plan accordingly.

How do I get around?

While we recommend going carless in Breckenridge, if you do need to rent or drive your car, make sure you visit GoI70.com to learn the best times to travel to avoid congestion. The Breck FreeRide bus picks up and drops off throughout Breckenridge, and the Summit Stage bus connects Breckenridge and its surrounding towns. Once you are here, we recommend exploring by foot/bike or taking the Breckenridge FreeRide transportation throughout the day. Most hotels have free shuttles into downtown, too!
