Leaf Peeping Season in Breckenridge

Fall in Breckenridge is an incredible time to enjoy cooler weather and stunning, colorful views. Due to our high elevation, Breckenridge is one of the first places in the country where the leaves begin to change color. Mid-September is when you’ll start to see the fall colors turn. Visitors and locals alike flock to the trails and embark on scenic hikes and drives exploding with vibrant colors of gold, orange and yellow. The brightest colors tend to “peak” around the last two weeks of September and first week of October (weather dependent, of course.) Not only is Breckenridge great for leaf-peeping, events and festivals fill the calendar and plentiful outdoor activities can fill your itinerary.

While you’re in town, sign up for a guided hike with our Breckenridge naturalists to explore local ecology, learn about native flora and fauna, and gain a deeper appreciation for our natural heritage. As always, remember to Leave No Trace, do not pick wildflowers and utilize public transportation to help protect what we all love!

Leaf Peeping Locations in Breckenridge

A couple hiking Boreas Pass in the fall

Walk around historic Main Street and take in the scenery and fall colors while exploring vibrant downtown Breckenridge. Lower elevation areas tend to change last, providing peeping through mid-October.

From Carter Park on High Street, climb the sledding hill to the ditch trail at the top, then proceed south to find massive spruce trees and aspen canopies over the trail. Jacks Cruel Joke is a steep hiking and biking trail that switchbacks down through the aspen forest with outstanding views of the Ten Mile Range and the Breckenridge Ski Area, before looping back to Carter Park on the Sunbeam Trail.

  • Local’s Tip: Take the free bus around town to keep trailhead traffic minimal.

The Summit County Rec Path provides the gateway to road bike rides all over Summit County and connects to surrounding counties like Eagle County, Grand County and Park County. Perfect for road bike enthusiasts, make sure to take advantage of more than 50 miles of this perfectly paved, award-winning Recreational Pathway system.

View Trails

This trail is spectacular in fall, when beautiful golden foliage arcs the path. And, at just 600 feet in elevation gain, this trail, located near the Breckenridge Ice Rink, is family-friendly and accessible to even the youngest (and eldest) hikers.

  • Local’s Tip: Stay alert and keep an eye out for speedy downhill mountain bikers while visiting Aspen Alley.

B&B is a loop trail that offers a mix of forested paths and open areas, featuring remnants of historic mining operations and views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a moderate hike suitable for most skill levels. This trail easily connects to other trails in the area to create the B&B, Reiling Dredge, X10U8 and Mineral Hill.

Minnie Mine Loop is a 1.6-mile trail offering stunning fall colors, historic mining relics, and views of the Tenmile Range. Along the way, explore remnants of the Reiling Gold Dredge, a nearby 1922 mining site. This loop connects with the ADA-accessible Reiling Dredge Trail, X10U8, and Mineral Hill for extended hikes.

  • Local’s Tip: Make it a day by stopping at the Country Boy Mine for underground mine tours and gold panning!

The Blue River Trail is a moderate hike that rolls gently along a ridge bordering Illinois Creek, crossing a variety of ecosystems, from thick spruce forest to aspen groves and open meadows. Mining relics, wildflowers, and views of Boreas Pass and the Ten Mile Range draw you along the trail.

Boreas Pass follows the old railroad line and connects Breckenridge to the town of Como, and offers spectacular views of the Blue River Valley and the majestic Tenmile Range. The top of the pass is 6.4 miles from the trailhead and marked by the old Boreas Station. This hike can easily be made shorter by turning around partway in or longer by joining connecting trails. This relatively flat hike is open to hikers, bikers, e-bike, and vehicles in the summer.

  • Local’s Tip: Please consider carpooling or taking the free bus to keep traffic minimal.

This loop trail meanders through aspen groves and offers glimpses of Breckenridge’s historic flume systems. It’s a moderate hike with varied terrain and scenic views.

  • Local’s Tip: Stop at the Scenic Overlook for epic views!
