Whether you have smaller children or are traveling with several generations, it’s easy to find activities the whole family will love. The most important things to consider when planning a family trip are: what to do, where to eat and where to stay. But no matter what you choose to do in Breckenridge in summer it’s sure to be a blast. To help you start planning, here are our top 6 family adventures that are big on fun!

1. Rafting

Rafting with kids in the Blue River in Colorado

Head to the Arkansas River just a short drive from Breckenridge or raft the Blue right here in town!

Some of the country’s best whitewater rafting is available just a short drive from Breckenridge. The Arkansas River in Central Colorado passes through the iconic Browns Canyon National Monument, and there are also options on the Eagle River near Vail, and of course, the Blue River in Breckenridge. Rafting is available late spring through fall, and there are many options based on scenery preferences, activity level, what type of group you’ll be bringing and how long you want to be on the river. Check out our tips for how to make the most of your whitewater rafting trip!

2. Hiking + Biking

Our favorite game? I Spy. It’s a great way to teach kids about plants and wildlife.

Get out and explore the mountains: Biking and hiking are both popular free options in the summer, with a variety of trails for any ability level. With gorgeous views, wildflowers galore, and high alpine lakes, it’s no surprise that hiking is one of the most popular summer activities in Breckenridge. The only challenge is picking the best trail for you. Here are our recommendations for some of the best summer hiking trails for families in and around Breckenridge, or swing by the Breckenridge Welcome Center at 203 S Main Street to talk to an expert about current trail conditions. Don’t forget sun protection, water, extra layers and lunch for a picnic at the top!

3. Pool Day

When we think of summer, we picture warm days by the pool and taking in the views. In Breckenridge, that’s an easy goal to meet. Swimming pools are the stalwart of fun on vacation and are a great add-on when planning a summer trip to Colorado. Most condo complexes will have a pool and hot tub available, and almost all Breckenridge hotels will have top-notch outdoor and indoor swimming areas. Try zipping down the slide at the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 or soak in views of the Tenmile mountain range at the Residence Inn by Marriott.

If you’re staying at one of the many vacation homes in the area, go where the locals go – the Breckenridge Recreation Center. The Rec Center is home to the largest public aquatics center in Breckenridge, complete with two pools, an outdoor and indoor hot tub, steam room and sauna. The Leisure Pool is a free form pool with a two-story slide, the Summit Plummit, that both children and adults can enjoy. A small slide keeps the little ones happy. Other amenities include a lazy river swim stream, basketball hoop and a vortex pool. In addition to four swim lanes, the lap pool has a mini rock climbing wall and a rope swing (make sure to check the pool schedule in the link above for swing times). In the summer there is also an outdoor “beach” area which offers a large grassy area as well as lawn chairs for those who just want to enjoy the sunshine.
