E-bikes are everywhere in Summit County and it’s important to understand safety precautions and trail etiquette before hopping on and cruising local pathways. Here’s the lowdown on how to use these machines, where to ride them, and how to rent an e-bike in Breckenridge.
Are E-Bikes Allowed in Breckenridge?
The town, county, and Open Space officials have worked hard to identify the safest spaces for e-biking. Here’s what they’ve come up with:
- Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on the Recpath, which is a paved pathway. You can take the Recpath from Breckenridge all around Summit county and even all the way to Vail!
- Class 1 e-mountain-bikes are permitted on the paved Recpath, as well as roads and trails open to motorized use, such as dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs on USFS property.
- E-mountain-bikes are also permitted on the Frisco Peninsula Recreational Area and certain ski area trails, such as Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, and Keystone.
- Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited on Summit County’s recpath system and on motorized vehicle trails.
- E-bikes are not permitted on natural surface (dirt, grass, etc.) trails dedicated as non-motorized (so please no e-biking on Breckenridge mountain bike trails.

Safety Tips and E-Bike Etiquette
It may seem as simple as hopping on your old-school cruiser, but e-biking is a whole different animal and requires mindful balancing and a new level of control. Keep in mind the e-bike’s motor adds some weight and most e-bikes ring in at around 40 to 50 pounds. Be aware of the momentum e-bikes tend to quickly gain going downhill. Keep the following trail etiquette in mind:
- Always stay on designated routes
- Yield to walkers, hikers and equestrians
- Downhill riders yield to uphill riders
- Signal when you’re passing on the recpath and only pass in safe places
- If you’re going to stop and take a photo, pull all the way off the path
- Always travel on the right side of the recpath in single file
- Always wear a helmet and keep both hands on the handlebars
